Dehler 44: European yacht of the year 2007

Latest news from Dehler Yachts.
"We are proud to announce the results of
the European Yacht of the Year 2006/2007.
In the 12-14 meter category the Dehler 44 was voted winner by a panel of 10
sailing journalists representing premium yachting magazines from around Europe.
There were 5 boats in the category apart from the Dehler 44, the Grand Soleil
40, The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 DS, the Maxi 1300 and the Najad 440 AC.
The Panel had a long discussion about the outcome as the competition between the
Dehler 44 and the Maxi1300 was very close. This was partly due to the fact that
the Dehler 44 was only seen at the first testing in Ijmuiden (The Netherlands)
in a more or less 95% complete prototype form but when the production boat was
tested again in Barcelona, the panel decided on the Dehler 44 as having the best
all-round package.
This result comes 3 years after the European Yacht of the Year 2003/2004 and
American Yacht of the year 2005 for the Dehler 47.
The Dehler 44 is the first of many designs for Dehler by the designers:
Simonis & Voogd."

Gleistein to premier new
yacht ropes at the boot 2007 exhibition in Dorf.
Two new ropes from Gleistein Ropes are specially designed for the toughest
racing applications and are now being presented by the rope makers from the
coast at the “boot 2007” in Dorf: Mega T-Eight and MegaTwin Zylon?. Both ropes
are characterised by extremely high strength, minimal elongation and very good
handling characteristics. For competition, this means: wind and weather can be
transformed into maximum travel with minimal loss – a small head start thanks to
the high tech ropes from Gleistein Ropes.
Mega T-Eight: the perfect halyard
It does not creep and definitely comes clean
– these properties make Mega T-Eight the perfect halyard when racing. Its
strength and elongation are comparable to those of a wire rope; only its weight
makes working with Mega T-Eight much more pleasant. The Dyneema? SK78 used
reduces the tendency to creep to a minimum and therefore the halyard does not
need to be adjusted so often – a tangible advantage during use in regattas.
Added to this is an abrasion-resistant cover, which is also suitable for
stoppers.
Structure:
core 12-plait from Dyneema? SK78 fibres
intermediate cover from polyester staple fibres
cover 24 or 32-plait from high tenacity polyester in fluo-yellow and fluo-pink, navy blue markers
Gleistein orange identification yarn
For the toughest racing applications – MegaTwin Zylon?
The extremely high strength and minimal
elongation make MegaTwin Zylon? an internationally top-class rope. Owing to its
excellent abrasion resistance and its very strong rope cross section, it is
suitable for the toughest racing applications. The water-repellent coating keeps
the rope dry during use. This reduces crystallisation of salt inside the rope
and increases its service life. The cover in polyester is extremely abrasion
resistant with a high degree of flexibility – one reason why Team BMW ORACLE
Racing relies on the rope.
Structure:
core 12-plait from Zylon? (PBO) fibres with water-repellent cover
cover 32-plait from high tenacity polyester
Gleistein orange identification yarn
basic colour grey, navy blue markers
Dimensions
In the specialist sailing trade, the prices for MegaTwin Zylon? with a diameter
of 10 millimetres. Mega T-Eight likewise with a thickness of 10 millimetres.
Mega T-Eight is available in thicknesses of 8 to 16 millimetres; other diameters

LEWMAR WINS
METS OVERALL
The One Touch Winch Handle was selected from five category winners in this, the 16th running of the DAME Awards, which is open to all exhibitors at the METS exhibition. The four other products that were highlighted by an international jury of designers, naval architects, consultants and experienced boat users were the Tracvision M3 marine satellite TV system from KVH Europe of Denmark in the Marine Electronics category; the Coolmatic CR Compressor Refridgerators range from Waeco of Germany in the Interior Equipment, Furnishing, Materials and Electrical Fittings section; the Suction Pump Out Nozzle with Splash Guard from Edson International of the USA in the Marina, Boatyard and Equipment Used To Construct Boats category and the Enclosed Shaft System from Seatorque Control Systems of the USA, submitted by Barrow International of the UK in the Propulsion, Machinery, Electrical and Mechanical Systems section.
This year's DAME competition attracted a total of 166 products from 136 companies, of which 74 were shortlisted for final consideration. The Jury also elected to use its Innovation Award this year and this was presented to Torqeedo of Germany for its Travel fully integrated electric outboard motor.
Commenting on the motive behind running the competition the jury chairman, IBI's consultant editor Kim Hollamby, said that the marine industry needed to produce products that "know no boundaries, owe nothing to tradition and challenge people and concepts in order to stay in tune with the expectations of consumers in the wider world. In rewarding entries that self-evidently offer the best blend of aesthetic and functional design, the DAME Awards serves as a focal point and critical reminder of that consumer demand within the Marine Equipment Trade Show here in Amsterdam."
Commenting on the One Touch Winch Handle, the Dame jury stated that it is "Elegant in concept, aesthetically pleasing, strong on detail design, well executed, effective and a great step forward...it ticked all of the essential DAME boxes and is therefore a worthy winner."

CHRIS FROST SELECTS LEWMAR FOR NEW SVD 54
![]()
Simonis Voogd Design B.V., located in Cape Town, South Africa, is one of the yachting industry's leading design firms with many racing yachts winning titles in prestigious races throughout the world. Just recently launched, Prodigy was put through her paces in Durban Bay during her sea trials, and then set off for Maputo to race back to Durban.
At the Vasco da Gama Ocean Race from Maputo to Durban, its debut competition, the SVD 54 owned and skippered by Royal Natal Yacht Club Commodore Chris Frost, won line honours and set a new course record with an elapsed time of 31 hrs., 4 min. and 11 seconds.
Prodigy, a full carbon boat, with carbon rig and a canting keel, is a complete Lewmar boat and is arguably the best-designed racer to come out of South Africa in a long time. Alloy Hydraulic 66 three-speed winches drive the Genoa and Spinnaker Sheet Systems whilst a dedicated 66 three-speed Hydraulic Winch drives the mainsheet. Ocean Racing Deck Hardware has been specified throughout the boat and Lewmar Clutches hold all the lines.
Along with Chris Frost, Central Boating, South African distributors for Lewmar, assisted with the specification of all the equipment onboard. Central Boating's Rob Sharp, director of Special Projects, was part of this project from the onset and worked closely with Frost to ensure the right product mix was chosen for each function.
S/V founders, Alexander Simonis and Maarten Voogd, have over 20 years experience in designing high performance yachts and, as you might expect, with over 160 commissions successfully completed, varying from dinghies as small as 12 feet to mega 130-ft. yachts, they are keen to plan and design your new yacht…. with Lewmar gear, we trust.
Central Boating is pleased to announce the availability of
the PELA range of vacuum pumps for a wide variety of uses. The PELA range of pumps use a unique vacuum process to
suck out Oil or fluids quickly and easily. The process eliminates the need to remove drain plugs or tilt equipment. In areas that
are confined or inaccessible, PELA Oil Extractors are the solution!

The pumps all work in a similar efficient manner. Pre-run the engine for about 5 minutes to warm the oil and to allow the sludge to mix and suspend in the oil. Remove the dipstick. Insert the extractor tube into the dipstick pipe until it reaches the bottom of the oil pan. Firmly place the tube cap onto the container. One simply pumps the unit between 4 and 20 times to create a powerful vacuum in the pump and the vacuum then neatly sucks out all the engine oil into the see-through container. The calibrated walls lets the user know how much oil has been removed. A pour spout is included on certain pumps to help emptying. The Pump is removable from the container for easy storage. Available in three sizes, PELA 2000 (2.5 L), PELA 6000 (6.0 L), PELA 650, (6.5 L).

Tacktick enjoyed an excellent start to the New Year and the 2006 London Boat Show by winning the coveted IPC Media Electronic Marine Product of the Year Award at the prestigious awards dinner held at Old Billingsgate Market on Friday 6th January 2006.
Tacktick beat off stiff competition from B&G, Raymarine, Garmin and Navionics to win the prestigious award which was presented to Joint Managing Director Clive Johnson, at the awards dinner held in the presence of Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal.
Olympic gold medallist, Shirley Robertson explained why the award to Tacktick was so justly deserved, saying “Recognised as a bold and striking move when announced in 2002, three years on it is clear that Tacktick’s Micronet network instrument range is making a major contribution to the world of marine electronics.”
On receiving the award, Clive Johnson, Joint Managing Director, commented, “I am delighted that the media recognise the technology leaps that Tacktick have achieved in producing our wireless range of instruments; Micronet’s technology is still ahead of the competition and we have more exiting new products being launched at the show this year which are pushing the boundaries still further.”
Tacktick are already experiencing a very busy London Boat Show with the launch of two significant new products; the wireless Remote Display and the new range of Maxi large screen instruments. The Remote Display is an independent, wireless, palm sized display unit offering a combination of readout options. The simplicity of the programming of the display makes it the most flexible Remote on the market. The new Maxi range of high contrast, super large wireless instruments also being launched at the show are unique in offering sailors the ability to add mast displays to their boats in a matter of minutes without having the cost and hassle of running wires to the mast. Designed for racing and large yachts, the new Maxi Display is a high visibility mast display providing large 50mm digits showing a single line of accurate data which can be seen from anywhere on the boat.
